A strong theatre costume commission begins with a clear brief. The maker needs to understand not only how the costume should look, but what it must survive during rehearsal and performance.
Start with the production context
Provide the show title, performance dates, number of costumes, cast size and whether the garments will be reused across multiple performances. A school production, touring company and single-event show have different priorities.
Send visual references with intent
A moodboard is useful when it explains silhouette, colour and atmosphere. Mark which elements are essential and which are flexible. This prevents the maker from treating every image as an exact specification.
Budget should match the scope
State the budget range early, especially for multiple costumes. It is easier to simplify trim, fabric or construction before production begins than after materials have been purchased.
Durability and movement matter
Tell the maker about choreography, repeated dressing, floor work, dance, stage combat or quick changes. Closures and seam reinforcement can be adapted when the use is known in advance.
Measurements and fitting process
For remote commissions, organise measurements consistently across the cast. If performers change, discuss whether the costumes need greater adjustability.
Build the calendar backwards
Allow time for design confirmation, material sourcing, construction, delivery and any necessary adjustments before technical rehearsals. Do not set the shipping date equal to opening night.
