How Far in Advance Should You Order a Custom Gown?

The safest time to order a custom gown is earlier than most buyers expect. A made-to-order garment has several stages that ready-to-ship clothing does not: confirming the design, taking measurements, sourcing the required materials, construction, finishing, quality control, shipping and a final try-on.

There is no universal number of weeks for every DressCon gown, because a simple costume and a multi-piece structured project are not the same job. The useful approach is to work backwards from the event date.

Start with the date you actually need the gown

Do not use the day you leave home as the target. Aim to have the complete outfit in hand early enough to try it with shoes, understructure and accessories.

Complexity changes the timeline

A simple stretch dress, a boned ball gown, an embroidered three-piece costume and a custom Rococo commission require different amounts of work. Additional colour changes, unusual fabrics and matching accessories can also extend the process.

Measurements can become a bottleneck

A project cannot move efficiently if the maker is waiting for missing measurements or contradictory information. Prepare the required measurements, understructure choice and reference images before the production slot begins.

International shipping needs a buffer

Even when the carrier estimate is short, international shipping can encounter customs processing, weather or address issues. The event timeline should not depend on the parcel arriving on the final possible day.

Peak seasons fill earlier

Venice Carnival, Halloween, convention season and theatre deadlines can create concentrated demand. Ordering early is not only about shipping; it also gives you a better chance of securing a production slot.

What to send when you ask about timing

Include:

  • the product or project;
  • your event date;
  • destination country;
  • standard size or custom sizing;
  • major colour/design changes;
  • whether you need a petticoat, pannier or accessories.

This lets the maker answer a real feasibility question rather than guessing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can DressCon accept last-minute orders?

Sometimes, depending on the model and current workload. Always ask before ordering for a fixed date.

Should I order even if I have not taken measurements yet?

For a custom order, prepare the measurements first so production is not delayed.

Is shipping time the same as production time?

No. Production and transit are separate parts of the schedule.
